March 4 – 5: Essaouira
Travel south by private bus to the small fishing port of Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Walk through argan groves to learn about these endemic trees and their impact on Morocco’s cultural history followed by a visit to a women’s cooperative to learn about argan oil and honey production. Peruse the vibrant souks of this ancient walled town and its weekly markets, and top off your time in Essaouira with a sunset camel ride on the Atlantic coast.
March 6 – 8: Marrakesh
Upon arrival to this original Berber empire we’ll visit the night market of Djemaa-El-Fna—Marrakech’s central square, known as the “greatest spectacle on earth”—to witness snake charmers, fortune-tellers, and street performers. Sample local flavors such as tajine, couscous, kebabs, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, and sweet mint tea. Take a break from the chaotic city center and retreat to the botanical garden of Jardin Majorelle, which has a mix of Art Deco and Moorish features as well as an incredible Berber museum.
March 9 – 11: Fès
For our last three days, ride the rails on the Marrakesh Express back in time to Fès, as narrow stone paths lead you through this magnificent imperial city. Meander through the lively car-free medina, where merchants entice you with colorful mounds of spices and textiles in Fès El Bali (old Fès), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit an ancient tannery—nearly 1,000 years old—where tanners still hand-dry and dye leather using traditional vats of colorful dyes. Discover the 14th century architecture of this magical city.
